Call of the Wild - A Colorado Adventure and Wolf Conservation Trip

Our popular wolf conservation program, Colorado: Call Of The Wild, continues to live up to its reputation as one of the “best teen travel programs” out there. It’s always an old favorite among our trip participants here at The Road Less Traveled (RLT). Several dates for this popular program are already fully booked for the summer of 2024, but we do have a few available spots still remaining!

If you, or your teen, are looking for a meaningful summer program that combines some exciting outdoor adventure, as well as a unique service experience working with wolves, you are in the right place!

Let’s take a look at the trip in more detail.

Explore Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods

Arrive in Denver to start the trip, where our experienced trip leaders will be ready and waiting for you at the airport.

From here, we will make our way to Colorado Springs for the first part of our trip. Our campsite at the base of the Rocky Mountains will provide the perfect setting in which teen travelers can get to know each other. We play games, start exploring and settle into our two week adventure.

After a peaceful night’s sleep under the huge Colorado skies, we explore the iconic 1,300-acre Garden of the Gods, a truly awe-inspiring hiking location. With unique rock formations and winding trails, it's one of the best Colorado spots to explore. We finish our day chasing the views of the iconic mountains of Colorado as we drive south to Mission: Wolf, a remote wolf sanctuary close to Westcliffe, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

A week of rewarding community service with wolves

For the next part of our trip, we immerse ourselves in life at Mission Wolf. The days spent working on service projects at the wolf sanctuary will be hugely memorable, and teens will have unique experiences you cannot get anywhere else.

Our teen travelers will get to interact with the wolves face to face. Being so close with these incredible animals in their enclosures will be a core memory for the group for many years. We will learn about the wolves' backgrounds, their individual stories and their own personalities. We will also learn about the reintroduction of this misunderstood species to Yellowstone National Park, as well as how we can continue helping them to thrive long after the trip is over.

As well as working with the wolves, we will also volunteer with other tasks at the sanctuary such as the chopping of firewood, basic construction work, the repair of fences and enclosures, and big feed days.

Spending time up in the mountains, sleeping under the stars and giving back to such an important cause, is a time for teens to unwind, build strong relationships with each other, and reconnect with nature.

Climbing, hiking, rafting, and other exciting outdoor activities…

For the last section of our trip, we say goodbye to our new four legged friends at Mission Wolf and head to Buena Vista. Here we get the adrenaline pumping through an abundance of opportunities for hiking, rafting, paddleboarding, climbing, sand dune surfing, and other outdoor activities to round off our time in Colorado. Exploring the Arkansas River, the Rocky Mountains, San Isabel National Forest, The Great Sand Dunes National Park, and Brown’s Canyon allows students to experience the adventurous scenery that Colorado is so well known for.

For our final day, we relax in the hot springs of Mt Princeton and finish the day with our famous RLT Banquet. Over the past two weeks, the group will have grown together and built strong friendships through the challenges and shared experiences. We take the evening to reflect on this and enjoy the last night together around the campfire before departing in the morning and going our separate ways.
