WHAT IS A TEEN TRAVEL PROGRAM LIKE?

The following blog was written by Will, a Summer 2022 RLT Alum. Hear what its like on a teen travel program, straight from a first year traveler!

“Last summer I had the opportunity to participate in the Malama ‘Aina RLT trip to Hawaii. It was my first time traveling beyond the contiguous United States, flying by myself, and going on a trip without any friends or family. Although I was a little nervous before leaving, I was mostly excited.

For the first few days of the trip, our group set up camp at our campsite on the beach. We did environmental community service with the locals who were very knowledgeable and welcoming, learned about the community and how they preserve their resources, explored the island, and got to know each other. I immediately connected with the other kids in my group who came from all different parts of the U.S. and beyond.

At first, it wasn’t easy sleeping in a tent on a mat and adjusting to the time difference but within a few days, I adjusted. The best part of the trip was experiencing a new culture and doing activities such as surfing, kayaking, boating, snorkeling, and hiking on a beautiful and unforgettable island. My best memory was the all-day boating and snorkeling adventure on the Na Pali Coast.

Our leaders were really nice and resourceful - they made each day fun, let us choose our meals which were different every day, and kept us busy while also letting us enjoy down time together.

This summer, I’m returning for another RLT trip to Costa Rica. I can’t wait to travel outside of the U.S., learn about a new culture that has always intrigued me, practice my Spanish with the locals, and meet more interesting people who I’d never cross paths with otherwise.

I would encourage anyone who’s considering joining RLT to step out of your comfort zone and make it happen. From opening yourself up to new people and places, you return home with a different outlook on life.

It’s also an indescribable experience to realize that the world is so much more than what you see every day.”

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us Will, and see you again this summer! If you would like to hear more from our alum travelers about their experiences with RLT, get in touch with the office!
