Why Parents Trust RLT: 30+ Years of Safe, Transformative Travel

"A few words about the leaders—they were fantastic! Our daughter had so many kind words to say about them… inspiring, knowledgeable, super passionate, kind, and helpful." — Parent of Jessica K, Colorado: Call of the Wild

Choosing a summer program for your teen isn’t just about adventure—it’s about trust. You want to know they’ll be safe, supported, and surrounded by leaders who genuinely care.

For over 30 years, The Road Less Traveled has built that trust by making safety and leadership the foundation of every program. Our leaders aren’t just experienced—they’re rigorously trained, carefully selected, and backed by a system designed to support them every step of the way.

Here’s how we ensure every RLT experience is safe, meaningful, and expertly led.

1. A Proven Selection Process

Our leaders are handpicked through a competitive hiring process that prioritizes experience, character, and qualifications.

✔ Experienced in Youth Leadership & Outdoor Education

All RLT leaders have substantial experience working with teens in outdoor, service, and leadership settings.

✔ Certified for Real-World Emergencies

Each leader holds certifications in Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and CPR/AED, completing over 80 hours of advanced medical training.

✔ Thorough Background Checks

Before hiring, every leader undergoes background checks, including driving record verification, to ensure they meet our high safety standards.

2. Intensive 10-Day Leader Training

Before the summer begins, every leader participates in a 10-day, hands-on training program in northern Wisconsin. This immersive preparation ensures they’re ready for anything.

🏕 Safety Protocols

Training covers everything from food safety and sanitation to medical response and risk management.

🚑 Emergency Preparedness

Leaders practice real-world scenarios, including evacuation drills, satellite phone usage, and crisis management.

🌍 Leadership & Cultural Competency

Beyond logistics, our program emphasizes empathy, communication, and building meaningful connections with local communities.

By the time trips begin, RLT leaders are more than prepared—they’re confident, capable, and committed to creating a safe and transformative experience for every teen.

3. 24/7 Support & Industry Accreditation

Even the best leaders need a strong support system. That’s why our team is never alone.

📞 24/7 Access to Full-Time Staff

Leaders can always reach our experienced office team for guidance, updates, or emergency support.

🏥 Medical Oversight & Annual Safety Reviews

Our protocols are reviewed each year by a licensed medical advisor to ensure they meet the highest safety standards.

🏆 Accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA)

As an accredited ACA member, RLT consistently meets or exceeds the industry’s most rigorous safety and operational requirements.
